How I Launched My Pregnancy Blog and Made $2,879 in 5 Months
Today, we have a guest post for you from Liesel, labor and delivery nurse, mom, and part-time blogger over at her pregnancy blog, Labor Teen.
Hi! My name is Liesel and I blog over at laborteen.com! I’m so proud to say that last one! 😊
I’ve been blogging for around 5 months now, and I absolutely LOVE it!
I one hundred percent got bit by the blogging bug!
My blog is a pregnancy and motherhood niche blog, and I help spread-evidenced based pregnancy, labor, postpartum, and breastfeeding information to other moms on the internet.
Before I get too far into my blogging journey, I’d like to tell you my story from the beginning.
Who I was Before I Started My Blog
Well, honestly, I was the same person! I’m just a little cooler, a little wiser, and a little geekier now! 😊
Before I started my blog, I was working (almost) full-time as a labor and delivery nurse. After I had my son in February of 2017, I took 3 months of maternity leave (half-ish paid, half-ish not paid), and went back to my job 2-3 days per week.
In the world of nursing, three 12-hour shifts IS full time! So, I was about halfway between full-time and part-time.
I’m going to be honest. It BROKE my heart to leave my sweet baby every morning.
I would get teary-eyed almost every ride to work that first month back. I LOVE my job in labor and delivery but leaving my sweet boy was awful.
My husband is in sales, and we made it work for a while. He would work from home on my hospital days, I would be a full-time mommy the other 4-5.
Then, my son decided he wanted to crawl at 7 months, and life got a little crazier!
It was virtually impossible for my husband to watch my son AND work on the days that I would work my nursing shifts. Almost EVERY shift, we had to enlist some extra help from family and/or friends. Thank GOODNESS for them.
If you’ve ever heard the phrase “It takes a village.” UM YES – it does! It takes a village to raise a child! I don’t think I realized that until I experienced it personally myself.
As my son was approaching his first birthday in February of this year, we began to realize that my work schedule just wasn’t cutting it anymore.
We made the brave decision to cut back my hours, and now I stay home with him during the week and work every other weekend.
It was definitely a pay cut, but the constant enlistment of family and friends each week was over. We both decided that at his age, our son needed me at home with him, and whatever we had to do financially, we’d do.
Even if it meant ramen noodles and cereal every day!
So, What Does This Have to Do with Blogging?
Decrease hours, INSERT blog! It just so happens I launched my blog, Labor Teen, right around the time I cut my hours back in February!
It really was the perfect solution.
I soon realized that I could totally blog while he was napping, and after he went to bed at night. It was perfect because I could “work” without being AT WORK. I could still spend quality time with my son, and do all the “mom-stuff”, and then just spend my free time blogging and making a little extra income!
I soon realized that this extra income had the potential to be seriously EXTRA income.
My only financial goal was to make $200 a month.
Because guess what $200 a month meant to me…
I could keep my maids.
THERE, I SAID IT.
I’m a southern, extra, downtown-living girl from North Carolina. Yes, I have maids that deep clean my house every 2 weeks. IT’S FREAKING AWESOME, TOTALLY A LUXURY, AND I’M NOT ASHAMED TO ADMIT IT!
My maids are so important to me, that I literally started my blog with (almost) the sole-intention of JUST making ends meet so I could keep em’ around.
After I decreased my hours, we cut the cable bill, I started shopping at the *cheap* grocery store, and we ate out A LOT less. But gosh darn it, I DID NOT want to cancel the maid!
So, we made a deal that if I could earn $200 a month within the first few months, MY MAIDS COULD STAY!
I’m happy to say that I surpassed that goal! But on a more serious note…
The REAL Reason I Started Blogging
Yes, a little extra income was ONE reason I dove into the blogging world. I mean, who doesn’t want to earn a little extra money every month?
But it was more than that.
Once I started to get interested in starting a blog (from browsing Pinterest, by the way), I started to brainstorm what my blog should be about…
Um…freaking DUH! Liesel, you’re a labor and delivery nurse….PREGNANCY!
Once it hit me, I got SO excited. Like…I got SO EXCITED.
I’ve always been into CREATIVE writing (not boring writing, like what we all had to do in college), so I really started to BELIEVE I could transform my knowledge I had as a nurse into some sort of digital platform.
I have patients come in every single day who don’t have a clue as to what’s about to happen to them. Quite frankly, having a baby is like nothing you’ve ever experienced in your life.
Plain and simple. It’s raw, scary, PAINFUL, and nerve-racking.
It’s also SO incredible.
You see, as passionate as I am NOW about being a mom to my one-year-old, I’m equally passionate about labor and birth.
I believe every woman has the RIGHT to be informed about the birth process, and I wanted to use the knowledge I have to educate women!
Whether you have an epidural, natural labor, a c-section, vaginal delivery, breastfeeding or bottle feeding…I wanted to share EVERYTHING I knew about EVERY topic. No sugar coating and no judgment.
In fact, aside from my $200 “maids goal”, my MAIN goal behind Labor Teen was to educate and empower just ONE pregnant lady.
If I could write an article that could provide some benefit to someone out there and make their experience less scary, more informed, and less like a rollercoaster ride…I would be happy.
I’m pleased to say that in the FIVE MONTHS that I’ve been blogging, I’ve reached over 150,000 women worldwide.
It actually brings tears to my eyes to write that. I’ve had SO many positive messages from pregnant ladies around the globe of how my articles have brought them knowledge and empowerment!
This one from Olympia has to be my favorite…I actually cried when I saw it!!
Why I Decided to Invest in My Blogging Business
It’s a business. I thought of it that way from DAY ONE.
If you want to be a successful blogger (and everyone’s definition of success differs), you MUST think of your blog as a business. COLD HARD FACT.
And, when you think of your blog as a business…you must think about EDUCATION!
I’m a nurse y’all, remember, I’m all about EDUCATING! I mean, GEEZ, think of ANY other successful career…law enforcement, military, marketing, accounting, circus performer…
You need at least A LITTLE education in ANY career to become successful.
And good education is not free.
EVEN if you do an amazing job learning everything you need to know about starting a blog, guess what?
You’ve spent about 3,965 more hours researching, wasting your time, and incurring endless more hours of trial and error.
Time is money.
The 3,965 hours you spend browsing free articles on how to start a blog could have been devoted to monetizing your blog and actually making money!
I made the decision to invest in a little education, so I could ultimately take a swing at this whole blogging thing the smart way.
How I Found Create and Go
I knew from DAY ONE that I needed help starting my blog. I did NOT want to go about doing this the wrong way.
I NEEDED someone to walk me through the steps of mastering WordPress, creating my website, and learning what widgets are.
I know what widgets are now, don’t worry! 😊
- I have NO technical background.
- Computers confuse me.
- WordPress was overwhelming.
- I knew I wanted to start my blog so desperately.
- I just needed help.
I needed screenshots, videos, and step-by-step tutorials. I was LOST when I started to read about backlinking, html, and CODING. Bah. Coding. I STILL don’t really know how to code!
Thankfully, you can have a very successful blog with little-to-no coding knowledge (aka, little ol’ me)!
I first came across Create and Go on Pinterest! As soon as I saw their Launch Your Blog Course, I was sold. They literally explained EVERYTHING you need to know about how to set up your blog.
I signed up for their email list to get their free 7-Day eCourse on how to start your blog and soon realized that the Launch Your Blog Course was exactly what I needed!
They could solve my technical-lacking blog probs’, and I could start my blog FASTER, with more KNOWLEDGE, and without feeling like I still needed another resource.
I saw a few other “launch your blog” courses on Pinterest, and this one is gold, y’all. It’s affordable, easy, and most importantly, THOROUGH.
Alex and Lauren are some of the most GENUINE bloggers out there, and I cannot say how much they helped me in the beginning! I needed guidance, and that’s exactly what their course provided.

Proof of Blogging Success
Alright, SCREENSHOTS. Let’s talk about what happened after I took Alex and Lauren’s course…
I successfully launched my blog on February 5th, 2018. And WOW, what a crazy five months it has been.
I had 28,893 page views in my first month of blogging.
That’s freaking crazy to think about. After only two months, I had enough traffic to apply to a fancy ad agency that currently manages all the ads on my site. This is the main way I monetize my content.
Those first two months, I made just under $30 each month, but MAN, that third month. I made a total of $842.88. (Yay maids!)
My traffic had a nice spike, and my ad agency had kicked in. I also upped my affiliate marketing game.
That month, (April), I made $200.14 in affiliate marketing ALONE, and it continues to rise each month as I implement new strategies.
Last month, I brought in a total of $914.95, and this month I’m hoping to hit that $1,000 mark! (We’re only a few days into July…and I’ve already made $75.23…not counting ads!)
As of July 5th, 2018, my five-month mark, I’ve made a total of $2,879 and have had 237,188 pageviews on my site!
I already had a decent amount of knowledge in marketing, Pinterest, and monetizing my blog (my husband is in sales, so I guess I get that from him!) 😊
So, I did already have a lot of the necessary knowledge to implement into my blogging biz, but I just couldn’t CREATE it.
Although, if you have no knowledge in marketing, monetizing, or Pinterest, I highly recommend going straight for the bundle to make sure you have all of the tools that you need to not only start your blog but also to get traffic and monetize it.
I can’t tell you how many people I know (through their fancy Facebook group!) have not only successfully LAUNCHED their blogs, but IMPLEMENTED their blogs, and MONETIZED their blogs by using this bundle.
[If you’d like to check out all 4 courses that will help you get started, drive traffic, and monetize, you can check out Pro Blogger Bundle here.]
I’m now on my way to continue to learn how to increase my traffic, dive more into affiliate sales, and brainstorm a course of my own to create.
Thank you so much taking the time to read my story, guys! Check me out at LaborTeen.com if you are a mom and want to follow my blogging journey or just to see more of what I’m about! I promise it’ll get even more interesting. 😊
