How to Launch a Blog Successfully & Make $103,457.98 Your First Year
In this awesomesauce article, we are going to tell you 7 simple steps for how to launch a blog successfully while minimizing the headaches and growing pains!
The first blog we launched made roughly $0 and 0 cents…
In fact, it made less than that when you factored in the costs associated with starting a blog!
Newbie blogging = No money, no stampede of visitors, and a bunch of headaches and wasted time on things that didn’t work.
Our second blog???
Two months in, and we had 200,000 visitors to our website
Two months after that, we had made $3,955.05 blogging!
And two months after that, we had made $9,075.58 in a single month!
If you lean in closely, I’ll share with you the secret difference between the two…
- It wasn’t the difference in niches. They were in the exact same space
- It wasn’t their creators. We’re the same people, and nobody new came along.
- There wasn’t some special piece of software or new blogging “trick” we had discovered…
The difference my dear friends and readers was how we launched…
It really matters!
A fast and solid start can truly be the difference between having a blog that makes $0 and a blog that makes over 103,457.98 its first year!
It’s that important.
So how exactly should you launch a blog?
It’s not that hard really… I’ve broken this down into 7-steps.
How to Launch a Blog Successfully (7 Simple Steps)
Become an investor (in YOU).
This might seem like a strange step #1, but it’s a mindset shift that’s insanely valuable in the beginning of launching a blog.
There are two types of people in the world as far as money is concerned:
One is Status Steve and the other is Wealthy Wanda.
Status Steve uses his money (what little he gets every month from his job that he hates) to buy status symbols to “improve” his life.
- The latest pair of designer shoes he has had his eyes on
- A night out at that fancy restaurant in the cool part of town
- An overpriced latte in the morning (because he “earned” it)
It’s all pretty harmless, but like clockwork, Status Steve runs out of money every month and has very little left over.
Despite raises and other good fortunes, every month there seems to be more month than money.
Compare this to Wealthy Wanda, who used to work at the exact same job as Status Steve.
However, Wanda made some different choices than Steve…
- Instead of the designer shoes, she buys a killer blog theme for her new fashion blog.
- Instead of the night out at a fancy restaurant, she uses the money to pay for online courses that other experienced entrepreneurs have created.
- And, instead of an expensive latte, she invests in books from audible.com to further her learning and grow as a person.
This is the secret to “escaping” the rat race and quitting your job.
And this is also the “secret” to why Lauren and I grew so fast…
It was due to these cheap, but important investments in our blog:
- We stopped going to brunches and restaurants to use the extra money to invest in courses.
- We stopped buying fancy coffee to pay for a monthly membership on online business training
This was so important to starting our blog on the right foot.
And I’ve got good news for you…
Investing in a blog is a super profitable investment if done right because of how inexpensive it is in the beginning.
Having these things can be the difference between a successful blog and one that doesn’t make it.
I know that was a bit of a rant, but I think ANYONE launching a blog needs to hear it! 😉

Let’s move on to step 2 on our list of how to launch a blog successfully…
Create your blog on a solid foundation.
One of the first steps to launching your blog successfully is to create the foundation upon which you will build that blog.
Not to get too biblical on you, but your blog’s foundation is the difference between building your house on the sand vs. on a rock foundation.
Having a solid foundation for your blog involves getting…
- The right host for the right price (We love and recommend Bluehost – you can check out our blog hosting review of others)
- The right platform you can expand on that has lots of tools for creators (We love WordPress).
Remember that you can’t launch a blog until you’ve started the blog, so check out our full guide on how to start a successful blog from scratch if you haven’t already.
It walks you through the entire process of setting your blog up and even creating your first post.
Get a deeper understanding of WordPress (or your preferred platform).
When I used Wix and other website builders back in the day, I was basically using them to avoid WordPress.
WordPress was scary and powerful, while Wix was fun and easy.
This ended up being on of my biggest regrets in website creation.
The time I spent trying to understand and use other blogging platforms was the time I wasted not starting with WordPress.
There’s a reason why WordPress operates a whopping 27% of the INTERNET (and that number is growing).
Many of you have WordPress already and are wondering “How do I get a deeper understanding?”
We learned the platform by:
- Watching online video trainings
- Taking courses and classes
- Just being on the platform and experimenting. Basically looking at every page, saying “I wonder what’s in here,” and learning about it.
Do this for a week, or so and you’ll be a WordPress pro in no time.
Make your blog look super sexy.
This involves a little creativity, a free image editing software, and getting the right theme for your blog.
Do NOT aim for perfection when you start designing your blog.
When we first started, it looked like our blog was about our relationship, and you had to look around just to understand that it was a health and wellness blog.
This was not our intention.
The point is that we spent HOURS and DAYS trying to make our blog look perfect, only to have it fall flat anyway.
Here’s an easy guide to making your blog look awesome…
Look at your competition for aesthetic appeal.
It’s okay to look at your competitors for inspiration and ideas.
This free image editing software is fudging awesomesauce. You can use this combined with some free stock photography to create unique images and pins for you blog.
PRO TIP: Make sure to optimize your images with Optimizilla BEFORE uploading them. If not, you’ll be uploading massive images into your blog that will eventually slow down your website. Trust us, we learned this lesson the hard way…
- Get your blog theme right.
Everything will go a little smoother for you with the right blog theme. You can check out our entire post on the 4 Best WordPress Themes for Blogging, but in short, our best recommendation for newbie bloggers is X Theme. It is…
- Insanely Customizable and Beginner Friendly
- Comes with Outstanding Customer Support
- Is like $120 cheaper than Genesis
So grab X Theme or another great theme that puts you in the driver’s seat for designing your blog.
Create the content people love to share.
Most people make a simple blogging mistake when it comes to creating content for their new website:
A successful blog is NOT about you. It’s about creating value for other people.
Therefore, your first posts should be centered around the things other people want and need.
The good thing is that finding the content other people want and need is pretty easy when you use the help of the following tools.
This is a free tool where you can type in the subject of your blog and come up with all kinds of content people are searching for.
- Pinterest Search Engine
This is another great tool for content planning. If you click the additional search items under the search bar, you will find exactly what people are looking for on Pinterest.
This is one of my favorite tools for finding great keywords and content people are interested in. You get 2 free searches a day, so use them wisely!
You want to take these keywords and turn them into shareable content.
My three favorites types of content that are incredibly shareable:
- How-to Posts (How to Launch a Blog Successfully: 7 Simple Steps)
- Listicles (10 Step Plan to Launching a Blog Plan You’ll Love)
- Testimonials (How Suzy Launched a Blog in 4 Short Weeks!)
These are the pieces of content people LOVE and also LOVE to share.
My recommendation for our Launch a Blog eCourse to start with 10 articles.
Make sure to set up email marketing.
Lauren’s face, when I told her we were going to collect emails on our blog, was priceless.
It’s hard to put into words, but this may help:
So I can understand if you have some reservations about this…
But here’s the deal: Email is crucial for blogging success.
It will allow you to:
- Capture leads
- Get more fans
- Follow up with people
And it’s where the MONEY is!
In fact, we recently made $9,447 in a week launching a new product to our list along with the typical, daily product sales.
Crazy, right? But it’s true.
A successful blog launch includes setting up email marketing.
For email marketing leads and collection, go with these two options:
The second best option is Mailchimp. This platform is free for your first 1,000 subscribers, but it comes with limitations. That being said, for those of you pinching those Abraham Lincoln’s, it is definitely a way to collect leads on your blog.
Set up a simple way for people to become email subscribers from day 1!
Get sparingly social.
One of the most common mistakes I see now bloggers make is trying to manage like 10 different social media profiles.
Getting good at social media is about focus.
For new bloggers, we like and recommend:
They are both search engines, meaning you will be able to get lots of organic (aka FREE) traffic over time if done right.
You can use whatever social media you like or feel comfortable with, just make sure when selecting that you think about:
- Where your target audience hangs out (go where your peeps are!)
- How easy it is to get them off the platform
- How much you actually like the platform (you’ll be spending some time on it, so don’t pick a platform you don’t like).
Social media is about focus, so try not to overcomplicate it.
Start with two in the beginning. One of our favorite quotes regarding this is…
A jack of all trades is a master of none. If you focus on everything, you will end up UNFOCUSED on everything.
Alright… Take those steps, and you OFFICIALLY have a badass blog!
It’s time to release your content to the world, get on a schedule, and grow your blog!
Here are some ways we recommend that you can do this:
- Publish your posts on social media.
- Reach out to friends and family, and ask them to follow your blog and sign up for your list.
- Plan out a writing schedule along with your next blog posts.
- Join Facebook groups (link to our group) and other communities related to your blog.
- Take our FREE 4-Day Pinterest eCourse for Beginners to start getting traffic and visitors to your blog!
Here are 5 more bonus tips on launching a successful blog that we learned in our journey.
Expect both good and bad times.
Being a successful blogger is not just about laptops and piña coladas on the beach. I know that people present it that way, but the truth is that you’re running your own business. That means that sometimes, it’s going to suck.
We’ve had every challenge from the craziest technical issues to people outright stealing our content.
Just remember that you can’t appreciate the sunshine without the rain, future blogger. Shit’s going to happen, and that’s okay!
Monetizing your blog will come down to your creativity.
For those of you interested in making money blogging, having success is going to come down to how creative you can get. I used to think that only certain niches made money blogging, but now I think a little differently…
I have seen people making over $20,000/month selling courses about the weeds in your yard (herbs), and I have also seen people making millions selling swag for your pug.
It truly is going to come down to how well you understand your audience.
Writing is a labor of love.
Some days, you won’t want to write anything. You’ll just bounce around from website to website, trying to ignore the reason you walked to Starbucks today (to actually write a good article).
It’s a labor of love.
What I have learned over time from writing hundreds of thousands of words is that writing is a release for your brain. Sometimes, it’s harder to get that release than others, and sometimes it will really fight you, but it always feels amazing to finish a piece of content that you really believe in.
Don’t expect to love it every time you sit down at your computer, but learn to love the process. That’s what it’s really all about.
The Power is in the Process.
I talk a lot about this with our followers, but it’s one of the most important lessons you can understand.
As a blogger, you can’t be constantly dwelling on the end goal.
You don’t want to spend your time thinking about making $100,000 a month and how that will change your life. The only thing you need to be thinking about is the process.
The process is realizing that the only real power you have is in the present moment. Focus all your energy and intently concentrate on the present, thinking about what you can do in that moment to grow your business.
Focus on this moment, because it’s all you have.
