Why do we post income reports?
We feel that honesty, transparency, and openness is incredibly important if you’re going to teach people how to make money online.
We also know that many of you will be able to use these posts as inspiration and education for your own business. So we will show you both what worked for us and what failed.
You will better be able to make money online from these posts.
We didn’t start in the “make money online” niche.
We believe that it’s important to start your own business centered around your passion. Lauren and I are personally passionate about health and fitness, so that’s what our authority website, Avocadu.com, is all about.
There are a lot of “gurus” teaching people how to make money online and have only made money online teaching people how to make money online.
It’s a little bit ridiculous. We want you to know that our other blog is centered around our passion and that you too can have success online teaching the things you love.
You don’t have to just teach people how to make money online to make money online, and our blog is living, breathing proof of that!

This is the first month we didn’t double our revenues since the inception of our business…
Since going full time in January, we noticed that our business was consistently doubling in revenue.
Everything was going great, and that’s when Lauren and I decided to get reallllyyyyyyy smart. We were doing so well that we decided we should change things!!!
Here’s what we changed:
We took our popular product, the Yoga Fat Loss Bible, and completely scrapped it for something new.
Yes, I can understand how dumb that sounds, but at the time we just thought we were making it better.
The truth was that our customers already LOVED what we were offering, and changing it was pretty dumb. We created a product called the 30-Day Yoga Fit Challenge, and it bombed. HARD.
So not only did we take a week creating a new product that nobody asked for, but it took us another week to see that nobody was buying it.
Not a good start.
We stopped creating and sending new emails.
The majority of people buy our products from emails because buying ANYTHING (especially information products) requires a certain degree of trust.
It’s a little different with physical products that people can hold, feel, and use. Those products people naturally trust a little more if you have a good website front.
So, as smart business owners (sigh), we decided to stop emailing people… It was only later that we realized that majority of the sales we get come from email:
Compare this to May, where we were ON TOP of our email game, and the sales were rolling in.
We stopped creating new content and articles.
It’s a mistake that is subtle, but I do think people pay attention to if your site is “alive” or not. Nothing smells fishier than a website selling a product where the last blog post was three months ago.
The same goes for any place you drive traffic from. I don’t care if it’s Google, Pinterest, or Facebook.
Social media platforms all LOVE and FAVOR creators who are producing new content.
We hardly wrote any articles, which we believe also played a big role.
We started obsessing about optimizing metrics and not creating awesomeness.
This may sound a little counterintuitive, but this was also a mistake. We spent every hour:
- Getting more clicks to sales pages
- Obsessing about email open rates
- Changing our products
Here’s the thing about this: We can get a TON of opens on an email that leads to zero sales and terrible customer experience.
For instance, if I title an email “Lose 30 Pounds in 1 Week With This CRAZY Controversial Trick,” I’m going to have an impeccable open rate.
Conversion rates will be terrible, and your subscribers will start to hate your guts.
Why? Because the click was misleading.
Not only did it not deliver on its promise, but we would have tricked them to click through. Now we would never do that to any customers…
But we did try some experiments focused on getting more clicks with “cutesy” and “hypey” lines. This led to more clicks but fewer conversions. I don’t think people appreciated the experience, and we learned a valuable lesson from it.
All of these blogging mistakes lead to an important day in our business…
We had a $0 day.
Maybe one of the more painful days in our business so far, this was the first $0 day we had had for MONTHS. It was incredibly depressing and eye-opening to the fragility of our current success.
Up to this point, we had seen $600 days, so this was like completely falling from the internet’s grace. It was tough. We were fighting. And not having any fun.
The reason this all happened was discovered only a little later…
The Orange Tree
Lauren and I were walking one day and talking about the business when a “lightbulb” hit me so hard it felt someone tossed a sack of bricks into my chest.
It was something that not only changed the perspective of our business but also led to the creation of THIS website.
Everything about our business was the same, except our focus. We were spending all of our time focused on conversion optimization and squeezing every bit of juice out of the few successful articles we had.
We had stopped creating new content and had become overly focused on maximizing conversions.
It was like we were taking the few oranges that had already produced some juice for us and trying to squeeze them harder to get even more.
They were out of juice… It was truly eye-opening.
Not only did it slow our sales and slow our progress, but this obsessive mentality led us to change things that were already working!
We decided then and there that our business is not about direct response or squeezing the juice out of every last customer. It’s about growing a large and abundant orange tree with hundreds of different oranges.
Growing new oranges is much easier than maximizing the juice out of each and every one (especially the ones that are long dead) and a lot more fun.
Our new focus: Create a HUGE orange tree that never stops producing fruit.
Instead of trying to optimize every conversion on every article and email, we would shift our focus to creating more oranges.
It’s a mindset of abundance instead of scarcity, and this shift had a MAJOR impact on our business the next month.
It is creation that led to our current success, and it is creation that will lead us to more prosperous lands.
You may be thinking… But you guys still made $8,000 this month???
We were surprised, to be honest. I guess this is at least a testament to how far we had come. Even when we were doing bad, we were still making plenty of money to live off of and enjoy life with.
Sure we took a step back this month from May, but I’m damn happy it happened. It also led us to create this website.
