How We Doubled Revenues Every Month for the First 5 Months of Blogging
Let’s chat about how we doubled revenues every month for the first 5 months of business with our health and fitness blog.
This will be one of our first “income reports,” if you can even call it that. The intention of these posts is to give you more insight into running a successful online business and some of the ups and downs you can expect.
Hopefully, we actually shed some insight into this whole “make money online” thing and show that anyone can find success with it!
But can we be real for a second?
The truth is that we definitely have some fear and insecurity posting something like this online.
What will our family members think? What will our friends say? Are people going to assume that we are arrogant or jerks for doing something like this?
And while those are legitimate concerns, the fact is that if we want to coach people on how to make money online, you should be able to see this data.
Lauren’s and my only hope is that these posts serve to inspire you about the possibilities of making money online, not to ever come across as bragging or “Look at us!”
Remember that anyone can do it with the right tools and resources as well as a great work ethic! One more quick note before we begin…
We didn’t start out making money online by teaching others how to make money online. We don’t JUST blog about blogging.
Our main squeeze is in the health and fitness niche and can be found at Avocadu.com.
We teach from the standpoint of the success and failures that we have had with that particular blog (and a few other failures before we found success in Avocadu).
Before we share the numbers, we need to back up a little bit…
On Sep 25th of 2015, Lauren and I registered the domain for the current health and fitness authority website – Avocadu.com. However, we did not truly start working on the blog until around late November that year.
We already had a blog we were running called healthandhappyhour.com, and we were splitting time between the two, constantly in a start of flux and running back and forth between them.
It wasn’t until the end of November and for most of December that we finally decided to focus our efforts on Avocadu and grow it. After a month of focused effort, we had a good following and had collected a good amount of email subscribers.
While we were not thinking about making money with Avocadu and had not put any real effort into monetizing it, people were interested in the content we were putting out.
- Sold our cars
- Sold our furniture
- Moved into our parent’s house
Basically, we did everything conventional wisdom tells you NOT to do at our age. We faced our fears. We went all in – success or bust.
The crazy thing was that this moment of insanity turned out to be one of the best decisions we have ever made…
And in those first 5 glorious months of truly focusing on our business, we doubled revenues every month. Our first few months of earnings are below:
- December: Less than $100
- January: $566.82
- February: $924.40
- March: $2,352.83
- April: $4,244.35
- May: $9,075.58
Now, this does not mean we made that much money because there are expenses to starting your own business. However, we do want to outline what happened and give you some steps to learn from.
Here is what we learned and the most valuable lessons we took away from each month.

How We Doubled Revenues Every Month for the First 5 Months of Business
December – No Monies
December was focused on growth and not much else.
Building an email list, growing our Pinterest account, and writing articles.
While we had a startling amount of traffic, we didn’t have the slightest clue how to monetize it. Only later did we start to figure that stuff out…
January – Total Net $-207.33
January was without a doubt one of the most stressful periods of time in our business. We had “shiny object syndrome,” and we had it BAD.
Webinars – We ran a webinar where only 20 people showed up. 2 of those people were our mothers (not kidding)…
Launches – We did 5 different launches to 5 different lists of people. All but one completely flopped, and we learned we hated the stress of launching products.
Upsells – We built out entire upsell sequences only to have nobody buy the initial product.
Email Marketing – We wrote out obnoxiously long email sequences to people who never bought a single thing.
We literally tried anything and everything, which left us with nothing. However, despite our incredible lack of attention span and ability to stick with one thing at a time, we did one thing really well:
We failed, and we failed hard and fast.
If there’s a truism about blogging (and business in general) that really holds its weight in the real world, it’s this: Those who are willing to fail fast and quickly learn from their failures are the ones that end up succeeding.
We sucked at blogging for a while, but that’s okay because it’s a part of our story. We would be lying if we told you that we started our business blasting forward out of the gate like a champion horse in the Kentucky Derby.
It looked much more like a baby doe trying to walk onto the ice for the first time. Despite the struggle (it’s real), January was a time of immense growth and learning.
It taught us a lot about ourselves, and we grew as not only business owners, but as people as well.
February – Total Net $-104.78
You’ll always remember your first…
Not THAT first, your first real taste of passive income.
While it may appear that February was a total failure, it was definitely not to us. Despite some carryover of “shiny object syndrome” into this month, we finally start to get focused. Lauren and I also had some HUGE wins.
One of the biggest being the creation of a successful email sequence that actually led to sales of an affiliate product we were promoting at the time.
It’s funny to think about, but the $5-10 we got from each product meant as much if not more than the $1,000+ days we are currently having.
Yes, we had earned other money, but that’s the first time we had created a real system that generated passive income.
We had also started generating some consistent passive income from Amazon as well. While still ending up in the red, these small sales were the times when it truly felt “possible” and like we were actually going to make it.
It was exhilarating for us and confirmation that making real money online was possible.
If you’re sitting there shaking your head wondering how 2 people can be excited about $5, then we understand. Just trust us when we say that the first time making money online feels real, you will damn well remember that moment.
March – Total Net $1,376.20
There’s a little girl standing on the edge of the diving board about the jump into a vast bright blue pool, and she is afraid. Her legs are shaking, and she can’t move her feet forward any further.
She’s completely frozen. Her grandmother seeing this shouts out to her, “Just jump in!”
The little girl looks at her grandmother and yells back, “But grandmaaa!! I’m afraid!”
Her grandma’s mouth parts a smile with creases of wisdom and says, “So feel the fear, AND DO IT ANYWAY!!”
The girl takes a deep breath and jumps…
I always loved that story, and it’s fitting for the month of March. At the current time, we were promoting a yoga product to our fans and getting paid a very small commission for every purchase.
Like $5-$10 a purchase. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize selling other people’s products for $5 ain’t no way to the promised land. It’s just not financially probable.
So long story short, Lauren and I set out to make our own yoga product (the Yoga Fat Loss Bible).
We sat down, laid out some plans, and got to work. However, after about 4-5 hours of working on it, I came downstairs and we talked about how we were feeling…
We felt like we were not good enough to teach people about yoga. We felt like we couldn’t compete with all of the other products out there. And more than anything, we felt terrified of it failing.
After about 1-2 hours of talking it over, we realized something.
We were scared.
That was all. It was our body fighting us and not wanting us to change the status quo.
So despite all of the things we felt, we decided to feel the fear and do it anyway.
To our pleasant surprise, our fans much preferred buying our own product over someone else’s. And that $5 a pop turned into $37 a pop almost overnight.
Those $37 purchases felt like so incredibly much at the time, and it’s what set us up for a good April.
April – Total Net $671.74
This was the month of preparation.
We created another product called the 21-Day Fat Loss Challenge and hired an expert named Pete to create an awesome sales page for it. That’s also why our expenses were the highest this month than anytime ever in our business to date (hence why our total net profit was lower than the previous month’s).
We just had to wait it out and power through this month. We knew we were spending a lot of money, but we also knew the investment would pay off in the long run. There’s much to say about this month other than that.
Investing in scaling up your business can be costly, but it can also be worth it.
The page Pete produced more than doubled the conversion rate on our current sales page and is the main reason May was the first time we made real money.
May – Total Net $6,608.09

Closing Thoughts: Lauren and I both hope this gives you some perspective into both our business and our journey to finding success online. It wasn’t a pretty road, and it had quite a few bumps in it, but both she and I are proud of our success and the speed at which things happened.
We feel like people online often are forced to compare their own success/failures in business with other people’s highlight reels.
A real online business is not always sunshine and roses.
Not everyone does a $10,000 dollar launch their first month in and retires to the Caribbean. There are times when it feels highly discouraging and you’ll want to quit. That’s 100% normal.
If you stick with it, commit to learning from your failures, and keep moving forward you too will make this shit happen.
