Hey blogging family! Welcome to our blog income report January 2017 for our health and fitness blog!
For those new to seeing these income reports, they may come across as a little strange.
For those of you who understand the deal-io, you can skip past this brief explanation to the “Show me the money!” section.
There are lots of folks out there talking about making money online.
I can’t get through my Facebook news feed these days without seeing an advertisement of some rando with a big cheesy smile talking about their life changing webinar… LOTS of people running around calling themselves gurus and influencers.
Even worse and more confusing, there are lots of blogging “experts” that only make money blogging about making money blogging.
The sad truth about some of these “experts” is that they didn’t make money online until they began to teach other people how to make money online…
Which is pretty unhelpful if you have a blog on an unrelated topic.
Just so you know, the blog that we took from $0 all the way up to 10k+ per month in less than a year is in the health and wellness niche: Avocadu.com.
We found great success (and a lot of failures along the way) in that blog BEFORE we started this one. Our income reports are solely based on Avocadu’s performance.
They are not only a way for us to inspire you and show you the potential of making money online and how to make money blogging, but it’s a way for us to connect with you and help you avoid the many mistakes we made on our own journey.
We know that it’s pretty strange having our friends, family, and loved ones knowing how much money we make, but that’s the tradeoff we choose for the transparency this provides.
Also, we pay attention to the other big bloggers that do income reports… And frankly, they inspire us.
Sometimes just knowing that life-changing income is possible is all the mind needs to move forward past the pain of starting out.
These reports help fan Lauren and I’s flame… It gives us the fire to do better and to push harder. The extra nudge to put in those extra 2 hours at the end of a long day. I think that stuff matters.

Here’s what we learned and what you should know about:
Sales tripled (as predicted). For the past two months, I’ve been droning on about how our sales will improve in January, because that’s just how it goes in the health and fitness industry. New year, new you.
I feel like we’re starting to get into a rhythm with this whole making money online thing, and it feels good.
We are also still considering creating an eCourse on creating and selling your own eBooks and programs in the coming months on Create and Go. But this is one of those things that I will need to see genuine interest in before moving forward.

Takeaway for you from what we learned:
Business, even online, is cyclical. Next year, we are going to take even more care and focus during these months to maximize our revenues in January and minimize the damages done by the November and December months. In other news…
Our Probiotic supplement is doing well!
As stated in our last income report, we launched our first supplement ever after spending months trying to work out the details in January.
We started by trying to sell whey protein, but we quickly found out the margins were too small for all the headache involved with setting up it and trying to sell it.
We finally decided on a premium probiotic and boy we’re am glad we did. $2,838.65 profit from that product alone in January is a serious win.
That’s an extra $34,065.80 a year if sales hold and is something we are very pumped about! What’s just as exciting is that is that our customers are REALLY happy with it!
Also, I took another leap of faith for selling our supplements… I purchased Ezra Firestone’s Shopify editor, Zipify Pages, in it’s Beta. You see, the problem with Shopify is the page editors and templates that are provided.
They have a great and trusted backend system for taking payments, organizing shipping, and all the other aspects of running an online business, but the page editors operate like WordPress 2010.
It’s not fun for a marketer who needs things done a specific way. This is also the reason why I dropped Teachable on its butt before I even got started with it.
Yes, they seem to have an excellent system for people creating eCourses, but that sales page editor is a marketing nightmare.
If I can’t sell my product, I really don’t care how amazing the backend is… This is just another reason why I have such a love for the Clickfunnels editor.
It’s COMPLETELY customizable (see my full review of Clickfunnels below).
And I truly believe Zipify Pages is going to be the Clickfunnels editor for eCommerce. Complete customization.
Keep in mind that purchasing any product in its beta is a gamble at best, especially when it costs $425 per year, but for the additional conversions, it will have a great ROI for us. To be honest, the editor has flaws, but it’s a 10x better system than what Shopify gives you.
Here’s something else interesting about my purchase… I purchased Ezra’s beta system off a whim. I’ve followed Ezra Firestone for YEARS now, but never bought any of his stuff because I’m not into the Ecommerce game.
He is always giving out great content and has given me a ton of free added value over the years. So, even though I knew a beta product would have flaws and I’m not an early adopter in ANYTHING, I jumped on it. Trust will do that to you.
Takeaway for you from what we learned:
Conversion rates are higher on physical products (our physical product converts 2x better than our digital products).
I would consider it as a way to boost your sales if you can find products that you truly believe in. Moving on…
Expenses Were High This Month
There is a monster living inside of us. It’s the same monster that creates stories like that of Allen Iverson who made over 700 million in his NBA career and is now dead broke.
There are thousands of insane stories just like this, especially with athletes in particular. I’ve actually named mine the: “You Deserve This Monster.”
This is what happens when you start to find any form of success.
- I deserve to live a certain way in a certain neighborhood with certain people.
- I deserve to eat here and shop at these stores, because I’ve earned it.
- And I deserve to be treated well for my hard work.
It’s ego. It’s pretty much all ego.
Even on a much smaller scale, you will be surprised at how much your ego can affect judgment. You have a little success, and you start spending and stop learning.
It’s a slippery slope and a clever little monster. I am writing this as much as a warning to you as a reminder to myself. This is the reason people never truly find “wealth.”
It’s the difference of being rich and being poor. How you use the income you make really defines long-term success, truth be told.
- Are making investments in yourself and your business?
- Are you purchasing unnecessary indulgences?

Be ever vigilant against this monster. It does not matter whether you make 10x what I do or 10x less, it happens to all of us.
Ego is the ENEMY!

Believe it or not, those were photos that we actually used on our first, failed blog called Health and Happy Hour… Anyway, the cost of the summit is a hefty check to write, but I want to learn from the best, and we think it’s a great way to invest back in our business.

Putting Ads on the Website
If you have been following us for a while, you know that I was pretty against ads and monetizing ANY website with ads. I just feel that there are much better ways to monetize than with ads. I still feel believe that if your sole source of income is ad revenue, you are going to find it hard to make a full-time income.
If you have enough traffic to make good money with ads, you could be making GREAT money by selling your own products or even affiliate products.
But what about treating ads like a light side hustle instead? While my ego says that I’m right, right, right about everything and ads will hurt revenue, the stats and facts are what I should listen to, right?
Besides, I’ve been proven wrong thousands of times already in business… What’s one more?
I looked into the ads situation the other day and found out that with our high volumes of good quality traffic, we can work with a premium ad network like Ad Thrive. They set up your ads and work with you personally to maximize the CPM on your site without ruining the user experience.
My fear from this experiment: Our sales will drop, because people will be clicking away from our website to another via ads.
My hope: It does not hurt our sales, and we will add a passive source of revenue that in my estimates will make us an extra $3,000 – $5,000 per month.
Let’s see what happens…
We hired an amazing yoga instructor to do video workouts.
I sent out a survey to our audience of people who had purchased the Yoga Fat Loss Bible program recently. While many people love it, they really wanted us to include video workouts.
So, my thought was, why not make video workouts, and raise the price of the product from $27 to $37 or maybe even $47?
So, Lauren and I went hunting for a Youtuber that could produce us high quality video workouts. And after a few weeks of talking to random yoga instructors online, we decided on a certified Yoga Instructor named Kris Moon (website practicewithkris.com).
I’ll continue to update you with how this goes, but we feel pretty good about it!
We are launching a new program called ‘After the Challenge’.
February will be dedicated mainly to launching the most highly requested program we have right now… After the Challenge
People get amazing results with the 21-Day Challenge and love the program, but they always end up asking us this question:
What should I do after the challenge?
It seems pretty obvious at this point: Our followers want a lifestyle diet for them to maintain their weight and eat yummy foods again.
It’s been pretty conclusive from all the surveys we have sent that this is the absolutely next most important thing for us to be working on. So that’s what we will be doing in February and the next big project for us!
We do have a few new eCourses and programs in the works for you guys at Create and Go, but the important lesson here is this:
Focus on what will bring you the HIGHEST rate of return on what you are currently doing.
For us, that is creating this After the Challenge program. Our followers are begging us for it, and we know that the launch will bring us in automatic revenue as well as continued revenue on all of the future 21-Day Challenge sales.
All we have to do is create the program. This is important especially if you are a newbie blogger or still working on getting your blog traffic and monetizing it.
Focus on what will bring you the biggest return first.
Don’t create a product if you don’t have any traffic yet to test what is working.
Don’t start setting up too many social media accounts before you have your first blog posts written.
Focus on the ONE most important thing that you need to do next to move your business forward.
None. Reading books lately feels like most of my Tinder dates before I met Lauren. It starts off exciting and interesting, but about halfway through, it’s so boring that I’m begging for the sweet release of death.
Ok, my dates weren’t that bad (although I did get into a fight with a girl on a first, and last, date about Michael Jackson…), but you get the idea.
About mid-way through the book, the author has lost me by being over hype-y or standing on “principles” that don’t actually make any sense.
Most of the time, I pick apart what they say by comparing it with my personal experience. I REALLY need to stick to biographies of interesting people.
Maybe I will read that book about Elon Musk next… anyone read it? Anyhoo, that’s all for now folks, see you on the next one!
